NamWan Thai Cafe Brings Us Back To Thailand

One day while driving on Gerrard Street for groceries…

Sylvia: Whoa, look at this new Thai cafe guys! So pretty. Let’s go try it. Kev, park the car.

And so we park and head in. We are quickly hit by a bewildering array of mouth watering options.

They tell us that the most popular things are the bagged teas, and their purple yam puffs. The bagged teas are totally reminiscent of thai iced teas that are served on the side of the road in Thailand in flimsy plastic bags with straws, only here the bags are a thick standup pouch and the straws are big bubble tea sized. Makes us think back on our trips to Thailand. It would be so fun to take the boys there!

Since it’s winter we opt for the thai tea latte instead. It’s the same thai tea, served hot. Unfortunately when it’s hot it can’t be put in the bag, so we settle for a regular cup instead. We also order the Sticky Piggy sandwich, and the purple yam puffs, which we have to wait for 15 minutes for.

While waiting, we take in the place’s Instagram worthy decor. We find out later that the color scheme carries over into the food itself, not just the teas.

Rowan: Is it ready?? I’m excited about the cream puffs!

Our family is never patient when it comes to food. We kept checking our phones for the time, and when the food was finally ready, we ran out of the place like our lives were on the line. Kevin swore as we hit red lights on the way back. Once home, we rushed upstairs to unpack our goodies while they were still hot. Declan eyed the taro filling in the puff and couldn’t resist a giggle of glee. The pastry was flakey and the filling was very generous, creamy and smooth. Delicious!

The Sticky Piggy “burger” was a surprising blue colour! Truly on brand. The sticky rice stuck to the paper and was very hard to pick up to eat; if you ever order this we recommend that you have napkins and a fork on hand. The wrapping isn’t done in a way that allows you eat it out of the wrapping. But… that’s the only thing we can complain about regarding this burger. It was very tasty. The meat was seasoned well and the cheese balanced with the rest of the ingredients. The sticky rice was chewy and overall it felt like a Thai bowl in sandwich form.

Rowan: The purple rice is special
Sylvia: It’s white rice coloured blue… I’m not sure that the colouring is good for you
Kevin: The colouring is all natural
Sylvia: Cool

Declan: I really like the cream puff things and I think they should keep making them. And I think we should go there again.

Sylvia: We liked everything there. I think we’ll go back again for sure. We waited 15 minutes but it was worth it!

Kevin: I want to try the other stuff there.

Rowan: Yes, the cupcakes!!
